Software installation and first start-up

Note: This describes the standard installation method. Before you begin, please check the documentation of the software product for special instructions and additional steps required for installation.

1. Download the latest software package from our website; it's available at the software product's homepage.

2. Double-click the icon of the software package to unzip and copy its contents to your local computer.

3. Upload the entire directory structure of the software package to your server; use a target location that can be accessed by the web service and is allowed to execute binaries (like ./web/cgi-bin/).

Optional: If necessary, please adjust file permissions according to the requirements of your operating system. It may be necessary to change the first line of the startup scripts (.cgi and .fcgi) to reflect the correct path to the Perl interpreter on your system (non-standard installations only).

Accessing the software by using a web browser

Option 1: Standard method using CGI

Execute the startup script by opening the following URL 1] with your web browser: http://www.domain.tld/software/<software>.cgi

Option 2: Alternative method using FastCGI (improved performance)

Execute the startup script by opening the following URL 1] with your web browser: http://www.domain.tld/software/<software>.fcgi

1] Adjust the URL to match the correct address of your server and replace <software> with the appropriate program name.

Software updates

1. Download the latest software package from our website; it's available at the software product's homepage.

2. Double-click the icon of the software package to unzip and copy its contents to your local computer.

3. Upload the entire directory structure of the software package to the location of the current installation on your server.

Optional: If necessary, please adjust file permissions according to the requirements of your operating system. It may be necessary to change the first line of the startup scripts (.cgi and .fcgi) to reflect the correct path to the Perl interpreter on your system (non-standard installations only).

Notes: Before applying an update, please create a backup first (see FAQs). Don't delete or overwrite directories named ./Workspace and ./System which could be part of your current installation, because you would remove custom user data and settings.

Digitally signed software and you...

Our software is digitally signed to ensure that you are receiving a genuine product, even if you have obtained the package from a third party site or distributor.

Most operating systems provide built-in features to verify digital signatures. In our case, a valid digital signature contains either our full company name or the name of our managing director, Mr. Tobias Eichner.

Unfortunately, not all operating systems are recognizing digital signatures in a reliable way (for various reasons, see "On our own behalf"). In such a case, it is required that you manually approve execution of our software on your computer upon the very first start.

If our software cannot be executed on your computer, please follow these steps...

Microsoft Windows: If a notification dialog appears that the software could not be recognized, please click on "More info..." and press the appropriate button to continue running the software (often labelled "Run anyway...").

Apple Mac: If a notification dialog appears that the software comes from an unidentified developer, just close it. Now, please hold down the CTRL key while clicking the software's icon again and select "Open" from the context menu.

On our own behalf

As an independent software development studio, we are fighting for a free software market and fair competitive conditions, not bypassed by some global software companies just promoting their own interests.

Digitally signed software is basically a good approach. However, some operating system vendors are trying to build technical barriers and violating best practices in software distribution to tap another source of income (e.g. allowing distribution of software through their own app stores only, forcing developers to buy expensive proprietary code signing certificates or to accept tight agreements, just to name three).

Participating on such business models would involve high costs, which are finally paid by the user - you. And all this without a recognisable benefit or increase in security. We are refusing to do so, also in your interest !
