| The differences between
POP and IMAP
POP (e.g. POP3) is the commonly
used method to send and receive mails. All incoming messages are stored
on the virtual server and removed as soon as you downloaded the mails to
your local computer.
IMAP requires a constant
Internet connection when you want to read or answer mails, because all
messages and folders are kept stored remotely on the system. Therefore
it is ideally suited for accessing e-mails from different computers or
by workgroups. |
| Determine the start file
The start file is the file
holding the homepage of your Internet presentation. It's displayed automatically
when calling your domain name.
| The
following filenames are available |
index.htm
index.html |
Common name
of the start file (HTML). |
| index.var |
Start file is a language
selection one (Variants). |
index.cgi
index.pl |
Start file is a CGI software
(Perl). |
| index.wml |
Start file is a WAP script
(WML). |
index.shtm
index.shtml |
Start file is a HTML page,
containing SSI calls (please refer to "Unlock the
power of your system"). |
Important
note: If several valid start files are available, the one appearing
at first position in the table above will be chosen.
By
the way: Same happens to each newly created sub-directory. For
example, by typing www.sunnyscript.com/directory
it is possible to access the start file directly. |
| Naming conventions for
files and directories
Special characters (e.g.
ä, ö, ü, ß) as well as spaces should be avoided. Please
also note, that all names are handled case-sensitive.
Special characters may be
accepted, but such named objects are probably not available online (because
special chars are often interpreted as control commands). |

| Domain names... |
|
 |
 |
| During order processing,
you have specified the domain name used for your new virtual server or
have contacted our customer service to configure a domain name.
In order to make a new domain
available on your virtual server, you have to update the domain name record
located at the Whois database of the concerned domain registrar.
In most cases this task can
be easily done online on the registrar's website:
Within the mail "Technical
details / virtual server configuration", you find the DNS (domain name
server) information. Replace the current name server entries with these
new ones.
Normally it takes some days
for the registrar to update the Whois database, but then the domain name
will be available on your virtual server.
If you have questions or
are unsure about this procedure, please contact our customer service via
e-mail for additional assistance. |

 |
| How to transfer files... |
|
 |
 |
| FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP is the most convenient
way to transfer files to your virtual server. In order to access the system
via FTP, you just need to authenticate yourself with your login information.
FTP client software is available
for most computer platforms on market.
Additional information and
notes regarding file and directory structures as well as more details about
FTP itself are available at "Unlock the power of
your system". |
| Admin panel
Your virtual server comes
with an interactive, self-explaining administration panel, which allows
file transfers and also handles many other useful features.
Please have a look at the
mail "Technical details / virtual server configuration" for details. |
| Netscape Composer (and
other HTML editors)
If your website is ready,
just click the button "Publish". Now you can use the integrated FTP client
to move the files to your server. |
